All
Last evening one of the foster dog's within DAR&E bloated.
She was taken immediately to ER vet and has come thru surgery.
The next 48 hrs will be critical.
Frisky was pulled from a high kill shelter in Md after being adopted out from them about a year ago. She is a lovely 3 year old gal.
Her owners returned her (with a case of HW's) because they didnt want her.
Please keep her in your thoughts as she fights for her life.

Absolutely will do. Here's hoping she pulls through and finds a good forever home. :)

Thank you.
Sounds as if good thoughts are working for this gal.
The update this afternoon is she is doing well and when offered small amt of food, she readily accepted.
If she continues to improve, she may be going to foster home tomorrow afternoon.
She still has a long road ahead to deal with the HW treatment. She has had one treatment already.
Thanks everyone for keeping her in your thoughts.

It is with great sadness I tell everyone Frisky has lost her battle to bloat.
She was just doing better and we had hopes she would rally and finally be able to move on to her forever home.

Kathleen...We are so sorry to hear about Frisky.
Poor girl.

We're all a little stunned to say the least. Frisky had rallied and seemed to be doing well so we were just shocked when she crashed as hard as she did. Apparently the trauma of bloat to her organs, the trauma of the surgery, it was all just too much for our girl.

I am so sorry to hear about Frisky. What an awful ordeal for her to have to go thru. Having Irish Setters, I have lost 1 dog, and saved one. Many people are actually having dogs tacked as a precaution. I am concidering it myself. May the shamrocks fall softly for Frisky

I have heard that some are choosing to tack the tummies during other surgeries as a precaution against bloat. What's the story on that? What do you all think about it?

Hi Athy
In breeds that have a high incidence of bloat, especially if it is prevalent in your particular line, the precautionary surgery is being done. (not just if some other surgery is being done) It is a devastating condition, so fast from onset to death, and if you are not there to catch it in time ........
And as you know even if you do catch it, not always sucessful. I have been giving this alot of thought for some time now.

So sorry to hear that you lost her... very sad. :(
About preventing bloat, as Joan mentions, in some breeds owners routinely tack stomachs. Friends of mine bought a Dane bitch to Special, and before she went in the ring, they had her tacked. Not sure if I’d want to do that.. but for sure we should all recognize the early signs of bloat and be ready to act. Also, we should all have Phazyme on hand. It seems to be the drug of choice for Dane people, because it has more simethicone than Gas-X and supposedly simethicone is the ingredient that is most effective.

To read more about Frisky, we have added a page to our web as a tribute to her.

The saddest part of all is she was going into a foster home, had had 1 HW treatment, and overcome alot.
We were all very hopeful she would be in her forever home very soon as she was a full of life and fun gal.
God must have a bigger plan for her.
She touched all who met her from the person who transported her from shelter to DAR&E, To vet staff, etc.
