Here’s something that comes up from time to time. We were approached by a very nice gentleman, married, three kids ages 4 – 9. He does not want to show in the conformation ring because it is too expensive and too political. He has never shown. He wants to breed... to breed Dobermans. He has not owned a Doberman, says he’s had Rottweiler’s and Sheppards. At one point he claimed he was “working with” a Sheppard breeder who just went out of business. Later he said he did not breed the Sheppards. The guy is a high school football coach. He was attracted to Warkant. I spent an hour with him, gave him the speech about it taking years to understand structure and movement, the breed and bloodlines. I explained why showing was (in theory) important as an independent evaluation of our breeding choices. I gave him all the gory details about what breeding Dobermans entails, especially in 2010. I flat out said there is no profit in breeding Dobermans unless you are cutting corners somewhere. I told him that there were better ways to make money, and even easier breeds to breed. Eventually I told him to contact Ron Babics for a Trotyl son... I gave him some other breeders names too. (probably should have sent him to Cindi's friend :D ) I should stress, he is not your average “get rich quick” dog breeder. He is focused and determined (his words). He has a life history of working hard to achieve goals.
So here’s the question: Do you try to take this guy under your wing and guide him, cause he’s going to do this anyway, or just walk away.
