Did you all notice that the AKC is going to allow changes in the names of registered dogs?
"The AKC pleased to announce a registration rule change that now allows owners of AKC registered dogs to change the official name of their pet. Dogs are eligible if they were born in the U.S., have never been bred, or have not won any awards at an AKC event."

Are they saying that the complete registered name can be changed? For example, we could change Logres' Voltaire to Smiths' Quincy? I don't see the advantage or purpose of this. I hope I have misunderstood as I usually do. :)

NO, I don't think so... for two reasons,
1. his name can only be changed to Bobbie Schmuckie; and,
2. he has already won an award at an AKC show.

OK, so let's use Claire or say, Cartier as an example. if the whole name can be changed, someone could virtually start to wipe out any records of a complete bloodline? I MUST be misinterpreting this.

The new regulation reads:
"The name of a dog registered with The American Kennel Club will be allowed to be changed provided the dog was whelped in the United States and in cases where the breeder(s) first individually registered the dog, their written consent would be required. A dog name containing a Registered Kennel Name cannot be changed without the written consent of the owner(s) of that Registered Kennel Name.
However, no change in the name will be recorded by The American Kennel Club after the dog has produced or sired an AKC registered litter or received an award at an AKC licensed or member event.
Any name change must comply with all AKC requirements."
The service fee for a name change is $25. The Dog Name Change Authorization form is located online. The completed form can be faxed to the AKC at: 919-816-4261 or mailed to the address on the application. "

Looks like the answer is yes... for Cartier. But Claire would require a signature.
This is not a rule that I would have proposed or been a big supporter of. The AKC is charged with protecting the integrity of the studbook. Changing the names of AKC registered dogs hardly seems like a clear step in a positive direction. I guess if pedigrees are all stored electronically it would not be too much of a problem to update pedigrees, but this could really be chaotic to those who keep paper records of pedigrees, to say nothing of reference books noting family trees. Not all great producers are shown (or win awards)... and tracking unshown relatives could be a nightmare. JMO

LiL Claire placed first in her class at an AKC event. Would that not be the same as "received an award at an AKC licensed or member event" and therefore the AKC would not allow a name change?

Sounds to me like the best way a breeder could ensure no name changes can be accomplished without their approval would be to register pups individually prior to their sale. Of couse, this takes away the new owner's fun of picking their pup's registered name.
